The Need for Balance

by Brandon Renfroe
All rational individuals strive for balance. In writing to the Philippians, Paul exhorted, “Let your reasonableness be known to everyone” (Phil. 4:5, ESV). The same apostle would admonish those in Ephesus to no longer be “tossed to and fro by the waves” (Eph. 4:14, ESV).
Nowhere is balance more needed than in the church. [...]

by Weylan Deaver

Taming the tongue: What’s in the well will be in the bucket

by Brandon Renfroe
As anyone familiar with the Bible could tell you, wells serve as a backdrop to many narratives. It was Isaac who “digged again” the wells of his father Abraham, after the Philistines had stopped them in their jealousy (cf. Gen. 26:14, 18). Isaac’s son, Jacob, was the proprietor of a well that [...]

A Time for Non-Conformity

by Weylan Deaver
On one occasion, the Lord remarked, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret [...]

Avoiding Extremes

He never saw it coming.
It was cold, the rain was likely cascading down in sheets, and he had just survived a harrowing experience at sea, culminating in shipwreck and a desperate swim to shore. Though probably near exhaustion, his mind still foggy because of the events of the previous two weeks (cf. Acts [...]

One chapter deals with the saints persecuted under the notoriously wicked emperor, Nero, which commenced in Rome about three decades after the church of [...]

Don’t forget to ask!

by Matt Clifton
There are a lot of instructions in the Bible on how to obtain things from God. James says if we desire wisdom, to ask God, but to ask in faith (James 1:6). He also tells us that we have to ask with the correct motives (James 4:3). John tells us that whatever we [...]

A case of the “got to’s”

Have you ever come down with a case of the “got to’s?” It is a horrible illness. It is characterized by symptoms like forgetting there are other people around you (self-centeredness), profuse sweating and fatigue (from running here and there), and constant statements of “I’ve got to do this!” and “I’ve got to do that!” This disease is widespread, and very contagious. If allowed to run rampant for a long time, it can certainly harm the body, but more importantly, even over a very short time it damages the spirit!
