Don’t forget to ask!

There are a lot of instructions in the Bible on how to obtain things from God. James says if we desire wisdom, to ask God, but to ask in faith (James 1:6). He also tells us that we have to ask with the correct motives (James 4:3). John tells us that whatever we ask in accordance with God’s will, we will be given (1 John 5:14).
But perhaps a key element that we forget sometimes is the part about asking!
Once a man was having a discussion with a small child, who said he wanted a new bicycle, and he wanted it more than anything. “Why don’t you ask your dad for a new bike, then?†the man asked. The child’s shoulders dropped and he kicked up a little dust with one foot. From behind a sour face, he replied, “He’ll just say no.†He had yet to even make the request, but resigned himself to an expected “no†without even trying.
We’re the same way in our relationship with God, sometimes. We do not receive because we do not ask (James 4:2). We desire to be in business for ourselves, but we do not pray about it. We want to be healthy, but we do not entreat the Lord in the matter. We need peace and safety in our day to day lives, but we do not ask from the source of all peace!
May we always remember that Jesus tells us to ask of the Father, who knows how to give good gifts (Matt. 7:11). Remember to ask with the right motives, from the standpoint of having a relationship with God, and do not doubt! When we ask in faith, God will give us those things that are according to His will. What more could we ask for? And what more should we desire than His will?
