From depths to heights

Psalm 130 paints for us a picture of a person engulfed in the depths of sin. “Out of the depths I have cried to You, O Lord; Let Your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications” (Psalm 130:1-2, NKJV). Swallowed and surrounded on all sides by his distress, the psalmist cries out to God for forgiveness.
When we are in the clutches of guilt or pain, we often feel like we are “caged in” on all sides, with no escape. Sometimes it seems as if there is absolutely no cure for what ails us, and that our sin will haunt us forever.
But in verse 3, the psalmist declares that if God kept a record forever of sin, who could stand? The answer, of course, is “no one,” but with God there is forgiveness! His mercy and forgiveness snatches us up from the depths of guilt, to the heights of thankfulness for his lovingkindness. Because of such a wonderful gift of forgiveness, we should fear, or reverence, the Lord!
The person who’s hope is in the Lord and His word is like a watchman, or a guard, who eagerly awaits the dawn. Through the danger and tenseness of the night, that shining hope of morning is there before him, and when that light breaks on the horizon, his spirit is renewed.
So is the person who waits upon the Lord and hopes and trusts in His word, as we take comfort in His abundant redemption.
